EC2 stands for Elastic Compute Cloud and this is the backbone of AWSInfrastructure as a Service (IaaS) offering. In this tutorial, we will learn to create an EC2 instance from AWS console and also check how to connect EC2 from SSH client e.g. PuTTY installed in local machine.
What is AWS EC2
Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) provides scalable computing capacity in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud. Using Amazon EC2 eliminates your need to invest in hardware up front, so you can develop and deploy applications faster.
Amazon EC2 allows us to get compute power in cloud through the launching of virtual servers called instances. When you launch an instance, you can make use of the compute as you wish, just as you would with an on-premises server. Because you are paying for the computing power of the instance, you are charged per hour while the instance is running. When you stop the instance, you are no longer charged.
There are two main things when launching instances on AWS :
These two dimensions of new instances are controlled, respectively, by the
Instance Type and the AMI - Amazon Machine Image .
Prerequisites
Before starting up this exercise we need below setup as prerequisites.
So, letâs get started by creating an AWS EC2 instance.
Steps to Create EC2 Instance
Now we have created our first EC2 Instance. Next we will connect to this instance from our local workstation and will install one software (Linkchecker) in EC2 instance and will learn to use that software.
Connect to EC2 Instance
AWS has provided a very good documentation in this regard. Here are the basic steps for configuring and connecting to the instance through putty.
So now we are able to SSH connect to EC2 instance through putty.
Installing softwares on EC2 Instance
Now we will install
linkchecker software and will use that to do some testing.
Checking Logs on EC2 Instance
We can view the console log of EC2 instance from the AWS console itself by clicking on the Actions menu, choose Instance Settings > Get System Log. Here is the sample screen looks like:

We can terminate EC2 instance by clicking the menu option Actions > Instance State > Terminate.
Here are the consequent steps related to termination of the instance. Please note that termination means Deletion/removal of the instance from AWS system. Also we can stop the instance. Please choose accordingly.
Summary
So we have seen how we can spin up one instance in the AWS within the free tire, connected with the instance through SSL client and also installed/used one sample software to get the feel of it. We have also checked how we can see the current log generated in the instance. Last but not the least donât forget to terminate the instance to avoid cost.

You can create an instance using the Console or API. When you create an instance, it is automatically attached to a virtual network interface card (VNIC) in the cloud network's subnet and given a private IP address from the subnet's CIDR. You can either let the IP address be automatically assigned, or specify a particular address of your choice. The private IP address lets instances within the cloud network communicate with each other. If you've set up the cloud network for DNS, they can instead use fully qualified domain names (FQDNs).
If the subnet is public, you can optionally assign the instance a public IP address. A public IP address is required to communicate with the instance over the internet, and to establish a Secure Shell (SSH) or Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) connection to the instance from outside the cloud network.

Partner images and pre-built Oracle enterprise images are not available in Government Cloud realms.
Warning
Avoid entering confidential information when assigning descriptions, tags, or friendly names to your cloud resources through the Oracle Cloud InfrastructureConsole, API, or CLI. Required IAM Policy
To use Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, you must be given the required type of access in a policy written by an administrator, whether you're using the Console or the REST API with an SDK, CLI, or other tool. If you try to perform an action and get a message that you donât have permission or are unauthorized, confirm with your administrator the type of access you've been granted and which compartment you should work in.
Tip
When you create an instance, several other resources are involved, such as an image, a cloud network, and a subnet. Those other resources can be in the same compartment with the instance or in other compartments. You must have the required level of access to each of the compartments involved in order to launch the instance. This is also true when you attach a volume to an instance; they don't have to be in the same compartment, but if they're not, you need the required level of access to each of the compartments.
For administrators: The simplest policy to enable users to create instances is listed in Let users launch Compute instances. It gives the specified group general access to managing instances and images, along with the required level of access to attach existing block volumes to the instances. If the group needs to create block volumes, they'll need the ability to manage block volumes (see Let volume admins manage block volumes, backups, and volume groups).
Partner Image Catalog
If the group needs to create instances based on partner images, they'll need the manage permission for app-catalog-listing to create subscriptions to images from the Partner Image catalog. See Let users list and subscribe to images from the Partner Image catalog.

Recommended Networking Launch Types
When you launch a virtual machine (VM) instance, by default, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure chooses a recommended networking type for the VNIC based on the instance shape and OS image. The networking interface handles functions such as disk input/output and network communication. The following options are available:

Windows Server 2019 images only support paravirtualized networking. SR-IOV networking is not supported with Windows Server 2019 images.
The following table lists the default and supported networking types for VM shapes.
To use paravirtualized networking, you must also use an image that supports paravirtualized networking. Paravirtualized networking is supported on these Oracle-provided images:
SR-IOV networking is supported on all Oracle-provided images.
You can create an instance that uses a specific networking type instead of the default. However, depending on compatibility between the shape and image that you choose, the instance might not launch properly. You can test whether it succeeded by connecting to the instance. If the connection fails, the networking type is not supported. Relaunch the instance using a supported networking type.
